Mozilla Thunderbird 3 Email Setup

1. From the Menu bar go to Tools -> Account Settings.

2. Click the drop-down button labeled Account Actions and select Add Mail Account

 

3. Enter Your Name (as it should appear in the From field of your messages).

4. Enter your Email Address (example: myname@mydomain.com).

5. Enter your Email Password and click Continue.

 

Choose Between POP3 and IMAP
There are two different options for how you manage your mail.  Each has their advantages and disadvantages.

First, is the POP3 protocol which will download the mail (remove it) from the server and onto your computer.  This is great if you primarily need to access it from your computer.  It saves space on the server, ensuring that your account never fills up. The greatest disadvantage to this is that you cannot access that email from any other location once you have downloaded it to your computer, as it is no longer on the Identifex email servers.
The second option is the
IMAP protocol.  IMAP allows you to read your mail from your computer, smart phone, webmail, etc. and it retains a copy of it on the server, so you can access it at anytime from anywhere.  The one downfall of this is that you may fill up your email box and not be able to receive mail. We recommend doing a little housekeeping on your account from time to time to save space.  The email account can hold 1 GB of email (counting all folders) before it becomes full, which more than enough for most users.

POP3 Setup (If you would like to use IMAP, please skip down to #13).

6. By default, Thunderbird will attempt to auto-discover your email settings and set up your account using IMAP. To use POP3, we will have to select the Edit button.

 

7. In the User Name field, enter your email address if it’s not already there.

8. In the Incoming field, enter your incoming mail server mail.yourdomain.com (ie: if your domain is acmeinc.com, you would enter mail.acmeinc.com. If unsure, use mail.identifex.com)

9. In the Outgoing field, enter the same thing as the Incoming field: mail.yourdomain.com

10. Click the drop-down button to the right of the Incoming field that is set to IMAP, change it to POP3.

11. You can now Click the Re-test Configuration button.

 

12. At this point you should have a screen like the one below. Click the Create Account button to complete the setup. You will be returned to the Account Settings window. Skip down to Step #15 to complete your setup. If the configuration doesn’t test out for you, please contact Identifex Tech Support @ 605-886-4806 for additional help.

13. By default, Thunderbird will attempt to auto-discover your email settings and set up your account using IMAP. Once it does, there will be 2 green dots next to the Incoming and Outgoing information. Click Create Account.

 

14. You will be returned to the Account Settings window.

Outgoing Server Setup

15. From this window you will need to now select the Outgoing Server (SMTP) from the bottom of the left pane.(1. in the image below).

16. Next with your new server highlighted as below, click the Edit… button (2. in the image below).

 

17. Use the following settings to ensure that you are able to send mail out effectively. Make sure your settings match those in the following image. When finished, click OK. Then OK again on the Account Settings screen and your email setup is complete!
